SIT down...

In the past few minutes, the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced the creation of a new government department, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, with a remit to "drive the innovation that will deliver improved public services, create new and better-paid jobs and grow the economy" and "help make sure the UK is the most innovative economy in the world".

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport will be re-named the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The current DCMS Secretary of State, Michelle Donelan MP, will become the Secretary of State at the new DSIT, and will be replaced by Lucy Frazer MP at DCMS. DCMS will have a re-focused remit on the creative industries, which make a huge contribution to the economy of Great Britain.

This may suggest that ongoing work such as the government's online safety agenda and the reform of data protection law will move to the new department, but this is yet to be confirmed.
